Opening hours for the fortress area
The fortress area is open all day and night all year. Museums, events, restaurants and concerts have their own opening hours. See visiting- and touristinformation at Visit Halden. 

Entrance fee
The entrance to the fortress area is free. Museums, events, restaurants and concerts have other opening hours and fees.

During events and concerts in the outdoor areas, parts of the area are closed and admission is only for purchased tickets.

How to get to Fredriksten Fortress?

By car
The easiest way of getting to Fredriksten is by car. From E 18: follow the signs to Halden and then to Fredriksten fortress.

Travel colletively
Take the train to Halden. From the train station you can take a taxi or walk to the fortress. On foot the trip takes about half an hour. NB: the terrain is steep.

Parkering
There are good parking possibilities at det fortress area and parking is free. During larger events, there are parking regulations with payment.

Toilets
Follow the signs at the inner fortress. There are also toilets at Fredriksten kro.

Accessibility
The outer part of the fortress is relatively flat, but the main part of the built-up area is so steep that it is practically impossible to get around by wheelchair (there is an altitude difference of almost 100 metres between the upper and lower parts of the fortress). The museums are not adapted for the disabled. There is no elevator in the buildings.

Safety and availability
Fredriksten is a fortress with high walls. Some of them are not secured. Be careful when walking along the fortress walls, and keep a close eye on your children. Be aware that cobblestones and stairs can be slippery in rainy weather and in the winter.

Show respect
Visitors are not allowed to remove parts of buildings, bricks, timber or other loose objects from the fortress.

Waste
Throw waste in the litter bins, and recycle if possible.

Bring the dog
All dogs must be leashed at all times.

Barbeque
Barbecuing is only allowed on the barbecue and picnic area at Gyldenløve fort. It is forbidden to use disposable grills and light fires all year round.

Guided tours
There is a Tourist Information Office just inside the entrance, where you can experience a multi-media presentation about the history of the fortress.
