Opening hours for the fortress area
May 1 to September 30
Main gate: 6.00 – 21.00
Side gates: Monday to Friday 7.00 – 21.00
Side gates: Saturday and Sunday 8.00 – 21.00

October 1 to April 30 til 30. april
Main gate: 6.00 – 21.00
Side gates: 7.00 – 21.00

Entrance fee

Free entrance to the fortress and to the The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum. Other exhibitions, guided tours and activities (concerts etc.) could be subject to an entrance fee.

How to get to Akershus Fortress?
The fortress is located in central Oslo with only a 15 minutes walk from Oslo Central Station to the fortress's main entrance in Kirkegata. Public transport such as tram, metro and bus is also close by.

Parking
There is public parking in the streets and in designated places, and parking garages near the fortress. Akershus Fortress does not have parking spaces for visitors. For disabled parking please contact the military guard at the main entrance in Kirkegata.

Toilets
Follow signage at the fortress area. The toilets are open during the openig hours of Akershus fortress. The museums, restaurants and the Visitor Centre have toilets available for their guests.

Accessibility
The fortress is mainly covered with cobblestones and can have steep climbs. In some places it can be difficult to get around. The Defense Museum and the Home Front Museum have facilitated the mobility impaired indoors. The toilets in Søndre Brohus are adapted for the disabled.

Wedding photography
It is permitted to take pictures in the fortress area. You must apply for permission in advance. Application for photography and filming at Akershus Fortress is sent to the Armed Forces, by Akershus Command. You must have the permit available during the photo shoot and show it upon request.

Some locations in the fortress area should not be used as a background: The royal mausoleum, Retterstedet and the temporary memory lair in the Museumsgården.

Safety and availability
Akershus is a fortress with high walls. Some walls are unsecured. Be careful along the fortress walls and watch the children.

Akershus Fortress has both civilian and military activity, as well as serving as the representation of the government. The fortress area is open to the public, but can be closed on short and long notice.

Military police authority is exercised at Akershus Fortress.


Show respect
Akershus Fortress is a listed national cultural monument and we ask everyone to take into account the surroundings with buildings, ruins, monuments and parks. The lawns are for use. Be kind to our trees.

Waste
Throw trash in the trash bags.

Bring a dog
All dogs must be leashed at all times.

Barbeque
It is prohibited with barbecue and open fire.

Drone Flying
It is forbidden to fly drone on and over the fortress area.

Alcohol brought along
It is not allowed to drink alcohol you have brought with you.
